Secrets of Blind People Have a Sharp Hearing
Jakarta, Blind people generally have a better sense of hearing than normal people. What causes the blind have a keen hearing?
Researchers from the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) at McGill University and Universite de Montreal have shown that people who can not see, actually have better hearing. But this generally occurs in people who are blind while still very young.
"Earlier it was known that blindness could help the development of music, but does not take into account the age of the person to be blind," said Dr. Robert Zatorre, a cognitive neuroscientist at the MNI, McGill University, as quoted by ScienceDaily, Wednesday (30/03/2011).
In people who can see, the brain area called the medial occipital regions play an important role in signal register visually.
Well, at people who are blind early in life will operate these brain regions to detect sound. This is what makes a person can hear better than normal people.
Also at birth or young age, the center of the brain that governs vision, hearing and other senses are all still connected. An existing connection is likely to be maintained and used to process sound in people suffering from blindness.
Because it is sometimes known to people who are blind can not only hear better, but also have a better sense of touch and smell stronger.
The results of this study titled Pitch discrimination in the Early Blind that has been published in the journal Nature on October 29, 2011.
