Scientists Successfully Create Brain from Human Skin
Jakarta, After the success of the sheep, or a doubling of the application of cloning technology on humans begin to approach reality. At least for now, scientists have successfully developed an artificial brain tissue from pieces of human skin.
Researchers from the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland has recently succeeded in developing an artificial brain. Artificial brain tissue was prepared from tissue samples of people with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and depression.
Goal of developing an artificial brain is nothing but for the purposes of science, because scientists have been difficult to examine the original brain tissue. To be able to get the original samples of brain tissue, usually have to wait for the new brain dead patients could be dismantled.
"The nerves of the brain of patients could indicate many things to us about the psychological conditions that affect them. But it's impossible to take the original brain in living humans," said Prof. Charles french-Constant, who led the study, as quoted from Perthnow, Sunday (19/2/2012).
The process of making artificial brains using technology that is little known today, ie stem cells or stem cells. In this artificial brain project, which used stem cells from skin samples of human ebrasal which then grown to become brain cells.
The same technology can also be developed to clone or duplicate the human being as has been done in sheep. Approximately 16 years ago, a lamb named Dolly was born of controversy because klonbing process rather than a marriage of male and female sheep.
The application of stem cells for treatment purposes has also been frequently performed, but limited to only certain tissues that are necessary to save patients' lives. But the multiplication of the whole is believed to be difficult to realize, because dealing with ethical issues.
In addition to mental illness research, artificial brain developed by scientists in Edinburgh is expected to be used for trials of psychotropic medication. If the trial is successful, scientists will use similar technology to make other organs like the liver and heart.
