Many doctors are less honest about Patient Care

Jakarta, still many doctors may not be truthful to patients. This was revealed by the researchers based on the results of recent surveys. Whereas in the standard medical profession must be candid with their patients, especially when discussing prognosis.

Prognosis is a medical term to predict the likely outcome of a disease, which often involve a detailed explanation. Based on the results of the survey found that many doctors give overly optimistic predictions to the patient.

When it comes to talking about a medical error or disclose financial ties to drug companies, many say that many doctors who have been holding the information.

The survey was conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and published in the February 2012 issue of Health Affairs. The survey has involved nearly 1,900 physicians. There are several trends that could create bias survey results.

One of 10 doctors say actually lied to a patient in the previous year, one third of physicians surveyed do not think should disclose serious medical errors to patients, and nearly two-fifths do not think doctors need to be open about the financial relationships with drug companies and medical devices.

"The survey results indicate that the needs and desires of patients may not always be the first concern of the physician. Patients who did not get the full story may not be able to make informed choices about the best course of action for treatment. Until all doctors take an honest and open approach, it will very difficult to enforce in a patient-centered care more widely, "Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School as reported from everydayhealth, Saturday (10/03/2012).

Although most of the physicians surveyed thought physicians should really tell the patient about the risks and benefits of treatment. But many who recognize that these standards do not always follow when dealing with patients.

For decades, the medical profession largely dominated by men that women are a minority physicians. Interestingly, female physicians are more likely to explain all sorts of treatments and honestly to the patient's prognosis as compared with male doctors.

The researchers predict it may be because doctors minority women as doctors feel more compelled to follow the standards of professional behavior.

When it came to lie, a general surgeon is most likely to lie to patients. Although general surgeons were also more likely to say there is a need to immediately inform the patient of any medical errors that occur.
